The actor was Jack Somack. Funny!!!

gilsquared is right … but maybe that was a typo? “Outtakes FORM the commercial” … or is that just something I’d write? … anyway, a co-worker who’s about the same vintage (shudder!) as I referred to that spot the other day and I realized how much she’d just dated both of us! Great to find it again! Thanks, Jack, wherever you are!

Change the description. The outakes WERE the commercial. These weren’t outtakes FROM the commercial.

Funny how I found this – I was watching an old episode of Family Ties, season 1: Death of a Grocer (who doesn’t actually die, hm) starring Jack Comack. I thought, “Gee this guy looks familiar…” So I Googled his name – he was in The Frisco Kid, one of my favorite 70’s flicks, as the Bender dad! Then, I went to youtube and found this old commercial – priceless! See where searching a name can get ya? See IMBD about him – you’d be surprised how many shows he was on!

Just great!! I remember this!! Thank you for posting! Is there a video or CD of this type of ad available? Outtakes are great!

I remember seeing this as a kid, and loving it. Later versions were 30 seconds, which ruined it. I’m so glad the full version is here. Even with the video latency, it’s still the best commercial EVER!

To show you the power of this commercial—to this day, 40 some years after it aired-I still will refer to a spicy meatball has-speecy spicey meatballa!

I’m offended by people who get offended too easily. This was, and is, a funny commercial about making a commercial advertisement… nothing more and nothing less. Carlos Mencia would have a field day with anyone who claimed defamation from this. Funny ad!
I’ll bet Ronny Graham had something to do with the writing. Funniest man that no one seems to know. I remember that he had Johnny Carson rolling on the floor on a couple of “Tonight Show” appearances.

Spicy meatballs, Jack!
I’m dying here. Funniest commercial ever made, and I had NO trouble remembering which product it was for, then or now.
Meecy, micey, ballsy…CUT!
Maybe the best commercial of all time.

In 1980, this was voted the best commercial of television’s first thirty years. The vote was conducted among advertising agencies across the country. In my opinion, it is a well deserved accolade.

This ad was broadcast in late 60s early 70s, I was in junior high school at the time. Alka-Seltzer had some of the best TV commercials at the time (this one, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing”, “No matter what shape your stomach’s in”).

I will boycott Alka Seltzer unless they put this TV spot back on for people to see and get a laugh. It’s not enthnically bad, it’s just comedy…grow up Alka Seltzer!

In my early years of TV commercial production I had the great fortune to work with Ronny once. It was a gas commercial and he played Mr. Dirt.
He was one of those superb actors, no matter what the role.

I remember this commercial but not the year it was broadcast.
